A Confederacy, Not An Empire

Here is an essay which lays out reasons why Europe does not want to go the route the United States did. We went from a confederacy to an empire, and look at the fix we're in!

We’ve seen over the last few days that the European Union is a federation of sovereign countries whose leadership has been found painfully – if not criminally – lacking in democratic principles, and several leaders of member states have been accomplices, on more than one occasion, in assaults on elected fellow leaders.

[That's a quote about Europe, but it's also a very good description of the United States.]

I would greatly prefer to live in a world of independent sovereign states, where people are free to live the way they want without interference from coercive Utopian monsters like the US empire.

How about you?

By the way, Article III of the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union read as follows:

The said States hereby severally enter into a firm league of friendship with each other, for their common defense, the security of their liberties, and their mutual and general welfare, binding themselves to assist each other, against all force offered to, or attacks made upon them, or any of them, on account of religion, sovereignty, trade, or any other pretense whatever.

Note that in those days the defense of "religion" came before "sovereignty", "trade", or "any other pretense whatever". How far we have fallen.
