A Truthful State Of The Union ???

Although he rightly makes this observation -

"Humanity now faces two simultaneous existential threats, either of which would be cause for extreme concern and immediate attention. These major threats -- nuclear weapons and climate change -- were exacerbated this past year ..."

- these threats are GLOBAL in scope, affecting far more than "the union". To make them the core issues of his essay should point us toward the fallacy which underlies such thinking: i.e., since we caused them we are capable of stopping them.

Ever since the nuclear genie was let out of the bottle more and more people have wanted to possess the power that genie can give them. We're NEVER going to get rid of these weapons and the threat they pose, even if we reinstate all the treaties Trump and company are overturning and write some more.

And regardless of what you think about global warming, I find it hard to believe we can cut CO2 emissions to ZERO. Here is why I say this:

"... the global food system is the single largest emitter of greenhouse gases, the biggest driver of biodiversity loss, and the main cause of deadly algae blooms along coasts and inland waterways."

That's right - WE ARE THE PROBLEM. Global warming doesn't exist because of WHAT WE DO - it is occurring because WE EXIST. So it will continue unless we rid the planet of ourselves.

And who's going to do that? Granted, there are some rich tech wackos out there who would like to try, but could they really get away with it? I don't think so.

At least I hope they can't.
