These so-called power brokers are part of the US deep state. They decide what happens, and your "votes" are meaningless.
Considering that they are sucking up to a man who is more or less a despot should tell you what kind of government we really have. The problem is not that W and Trump have joked about being a dictator-for-life, the problem is that the deep state appears to be unanimously in favor of such a thing ... as long as they get to pick who sits on the throne.
