No doubt many of these mines produce materials necessary to our modern economy, and some yield great wealth to their owners and shareholders; BUT ... some, perhaps all, also produce tailings and other waste and byproducts which may NEVER be fully cleaned up.

Here's something else to consider:
I have a close relative who is laboring mightily to find a cure for SARS-CoV-2 infection. I have another close relative who is laboring mightily to provide abortions for women who cannot get them in Texas and other states which are trying to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Who is right, who is wrong?
If we really believe in choice AND in the sanctity of human life, then why are we allowing people to die in an effort to persuade their neighbors to take an experimental gene therapy while enabling other people to abort their babies?
Does this make sense? To me it's all the result of a very depraved ethos.
