Who Or What Started The Wuhan Coronavirus Epidemic ???

In case you (like me) hadn't heard of Prof. Hall before, here is his CV:

Anthony James Hall has been Editor In Chief of the American Herald Tribune since its inception. Between 1990 and 2018 Dr. Hall was Professor of Globalization Studies and Liberal Education at the University of Lethbridge where he is now Professor Emeritus. The focus of Dr. Hall's teaching, research, and community service came to highlight the conditions of the colonization of Indigenous peoples in imperial globalization since 1492. In 2016 Dr. Hall's work on 9/11, false flag terrorism and the parallels in the genocidal dispossession of Native Americans and Palestinians became the target of a historic witch hunt led by the Israel Lobby in Canada. Professor Hall has published widely in his areas of expertise including the existence of Aboriginal and treaty rights as an emerging field of international law.

It's a shame that his comments about Palestinians have led to the apparent torpedoing of his career, but hopefully that side of him will not bias your view of what he has to say in the above piece. I think he makes several very good points.

We really need to know how COVID-19 came about before we turn our world upside down to deal with it. And his comparison to our misguided response to 9/11 is in my view spot on.

Are Exorcisms Real ???

I have never witnessed an exorcism, but according to this report some people actually appear to be possessed by "demons":

I know this doesn't prove that demons are real, but what else could explain such seemingly superhuman strength?

Perhaps there are things about us which cannot be explained using conventional science. If we could harness such abilities and put them to good use, would that be bad?

Thinking About Death

I don't think a lot about death, but I know it's waiting for me.

Today I read an essay about dying in The New York Times, and this particular sentence caught my eye:

"I am going to be in pain and die soon no matter how I behave, so I might as well be cheerful."

I'm about the same age as the author of the essay, and her observations strike a chord with me. I'll go when it's my time and there's little I can do about it, so I might as well be cheerful.

And if you want to laugh at my funeral, please go ahead. If I were still alive to see it I'd probably do the same.

Two Things About China

No. 1 - they produce most of our legal drugs:

80% of present medicines consumed in the United States are produced in China. This includes Chinese companies and foreign drug companies that have outsourced their drug manufacture in joint ventures with Chinese partners. According to Rosemary Gibson of the Hastings Center bioethics research institute, who authored a book in 2018 on the theme, the dependency is more than alarming.

Gibson cites medical newsletters giving the estimate that today some 80% of all pharmaceutical active ingredients in the USA are made in China.

“It’s not just the ingredients. It’s also the chemical precursors, the chemical building blocks used to make the active ingredients. We are dependent on China for the chemical building blocks to make a whole category of antibiotics … known as cephalosporins. They are used in the United States thousands of times every day for people with very serious infections.”

The made in China drugs today include most antibiotics, birth control pills, blood pressure medicines such as valsartan, blood thinners such as heparin, and various cancer drugs. It includes such common medicines as penicillin, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), and aspirin. The list also includes medications to treat HIV, Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, cancer, depression, epilepsy, among others. A recent Department of Commerce study found that 97 percent of all antibiotics in the United States came from China.

No. 2 - China is taking the COVID-19 pandemic seriously, while the US is not:

A Bay Area resident visited Kunming, in China's Yunnan province - about 1,000 miles southwest of Wuhan, where the coronavirus outbreak originated - on January 25.

He said that he saw more safety precautions being taken in China than in the US and that officials understood the gravity of the situation.

Seeing how differently the Chinese and US governments handled the outbreak convinced him that he felt safer in China than he does on American soil.
