SAVAK, our gift to Iran

Major General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf [Sr.] ..." trained virtually all of the first generation of SAVAK personnel."
SAVAK has been described as Iran's "most hated and feared institution" prior to the revolution of 1979 because of its practice of torturing and executing opponents of the Pahlavi regime.
And you wonder why they call us The Great Satan?

By the way, if Senior Schwarzkopf served in the late 1940s in occupied Germany as provost marshal for the entire U.S. sector, that brings up some interesting questions related to the books Other Losses and Crimes and Mercies by Canadian author James Bacque. Bacque claims that the Allies mistreated Nazi POWs (disarmed enemy forces) and sent many of them to slave labor camps run by the English and French, including ones in Vietnam. If these claims are true, Senior was in a position as provost marshal to have known what was happening. Did he facilitate the process, did he hinder it, or did he perhaps not know about it?
I have my own opinion as to what happened, but as in most things like this I have no proof. In any case, I highly recommend that you read Other Losses. It serves as a realistic and revealing counter to The Greatest Generation.

By the way, the claim that the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant is "unsafe" may be a red herring (they're ALL unsafe). A more likely cause for the death of the nuclear industry (especially US sales to foreign countries) was the Iranian Revolution. As long as dictators (Marcos, the Shah, etc.) were in charge, they could have all the nuke plants they wanted. But when "the people" took over in Iran and the Philippines, Carter and others decided it was too much of a risk to sell THEM plutonium production facilities (a.k.a. nuclear power plants).

We consume, and that's about it

Household purchases, which account for about 70 percent of the economy, climbed 0.2 percent after a 0.1 percent gain the prior month, a Commerce Department report showed today in Washington.
HOUSEHOLD PURCHASES ARE 70% OF OUR ECONOMY ???
We consume, but we don't produce. That means these purchases are paid for by borrowing money and debasing our currency. This is a perfect recipe for DISASTER.
And one has to wonder when Mr. Bloomberg's come back is that we have an infinite amount of money and that people can't stop lending to us:

I think Latin America is tired of the "help" the US has given them, such as the torture techniques training we gave their former dictators at the School of the Americas and the "free market" reforms that devastated their economies (and ours too).
I think we should tell the disciples of the Chicago School of economics to stick their theories where the sun don't shine, tell neoliberalism and the lie called "free markets" to go to hell, and embrace economic plans that benefit real people over corporations and bankgangsters.
Maybe then the US can again call itself a "democracy" without lying through its teeth.
